KENTUCKY CHERRY SUGAR PRESS, RICHMOND, KY HISTORYKentucky Sheraton cherry sugar press, poplar secondary. Rectangular post and panel case, two-thirds hinged plain top above two paneled inner compartments with the original divider, over two paneled doors enclosing one shelf, paneled sides, brass escutcheons, and turned tapered feet. Sugar well with interior panels to sides and strips to bottom edges. 37 3/4" H x 39" W x 18 3/4" D. Circa 1835-1840. Provenance: From the collection of Patsey Field Harney Madden, a direct descendent of the founding families of Richmond and Madison County in Kentucky, including the families Estill, Miller, Field, Hume, and Burnham. On Patsey's mother's side was Captain James Estill, an original settler of Fort Boonesborough along with Daniel Boone. She was also a direct descendant of Colonel John Miller, who was originally from Richmond, VA and a Revolutionary War veteran. During the late 1700s, he donated the land where present day Richmond, Kentucky is now seated, and began his family. The Miller's and Estill families were eventually joined in marriage. The items from this collection descended in the family, and resided in the historic Miller Manor in Richmond, KY. It was constructed in 1862 by Robert Miller, grandson of Col. John Miller and great-great-grandfather to Patsey.
Condition:
Overall very good condition, older refinish with a small knot hole patch, approx. 1/2", to left side of escutcheon. Old insect/worm damage to the front edge of the bottom interior board.

Constructed in two pieces, the upper rectangular dovetailed case having a hinged lid with applied molding and a divided interior; the base with a single long dovetailed drawer with divided interior and wood pulls, above two paneled and hinged doors, paneled sides, and ring turned tapered feet. Faded contemporary inscription on back left board references "Corolla Miller of Louisville, KY". 46 1/4" H x 37" W x 18 3/4" D. Second quarter of the 19th century.

Condition:
Refinished surface and overall general wear. Horizontal separation to top from wood shrinkage. Replaced hinges and lock; area of wood loss to back left hinge area at lid. Drawer interior dividers have been replaced with old wood. Abrasion to lower left stile; wood loss at lower left front foot. Glue blocks for underside of upper case are replacements.
